Hello Les Polettes
: here's our exclusive beginner pole dance moves guide, made just for those of you taking your very first steps on the pole!
Learning beginner pole dance moves means understanding the fundamentals — how to position yourself, transition between figures, dance, invert, and build your grip to progress to the intermediate level.
With the right pole dance outfit and solid foundations, you'll grow in confidence, step by step, during your pole dance classes.
Preparing your session
Choosing your equipment
Selecting the right gear is crucial for a safe and effective practice! ![]()
-
Pole dance bar: In most cases, when you walk into a studio for the first time, you won't need to worry about the pole itself. However, if you're practising at home, ask experienced pole dancers for advice — your pole needs to suit your space and installation conditions to guarantee stability and grip. Spin freely, but always safely!
-
Grip: As a beginner, it's best not to use grip aids like liquid chalk right away. Let your hands get used to the pole and build your natural grip strength first! Later on, as you progress to more advanced moves, you can use grip aids to help with bolder figures.
-
Specific outfits: The further you go in your pole journey, the more important it becomes to wear appropriate clothing that allows freedom of movement and comfort — think pole dance shorts and fitted sports bras.
-
Heels: Pole dance is often practised barefoot, but you can absolutely add some height to spice up your choreographies! In Pole Sexy, heels can actually make certain moves and figures easier.
Essential warm-up
A proper warm-up is the very first step — never skip it if you want a great session without getting hurt! ![]()
Focus on dynamic stretches that prepare your muscles and joints for the effort ahead. Wrist rotations and shoulder stretches are especially important, as these areas take a lot of load during pole moves. Check out a detailed warm-up routine on our Instagram:

-
Dynamic stretching
: activate each muscle group with fluid, flowing movements. -
Strength prep
: a few light strengthening exercises for your arms, legs and core. -
Breathing
: learn to control your breath to manage the physical intensity. -
Stretching
: take the time to work on your flexibility before you start!
Even when you're hooked and want to train harder and faster — take the time to warm up and rest. Pole dance is a demanding sport: progress at your own pace, and your body will thank you.
Top 5 beginner tricks
Here are some of our favourite beginner pole dance moves to try when you're just starting out. You'll nail them in no time, we're sure of it!
The
Step Around
:
A graceful little spin around the pole that will make you look like you were born to do this — even as a beginner! It's a fundamental move that opens up any combination beautifully.
-
Rise onto your tiptoes and let gravity carry you around the pole.
-
The key is controlling your movement for a smooth, fluid rotation while keeping a firm grip with your support arm.
The
Basic Climb
:
A technique for moving up the pole fluidly — the gateway to more complex moves. It combines arm strength with leg grip to carry you upward.
-
Start by wrapping one leg around the pole, use your arms to pull yourself up, then wrap the other leg once you're in the air to lock your position. Mastering this climb is essential — it's the foundation of many other techniques.
-
Pro tip: squeeze the pole firmly between your legs for better control, and push down with your legs as you pull up with your arms.
The
Fireman
:
-
The Fireman is an iconic move that blends elegance and strength. Wrap one leg in front of the pole and the other behind, arms extended for balance. This spin builds a great understanding of movement around the pole and adds instant flair to your beginner repertoire.
-
Coordination: sync your leg and arm movements for a smooth, harmonious rotation.
-
Focus point: keep your gaze horizontal to manage your balance more easily.
-
The
Back Hook ![]()
-
The Back Hook is a perfect introduction to more advanced techniques. Pass one leg behind the pole and hook it by the knee, while balancing the rest of your body. It's a great way to develop leg flexibility and strength while getting comfortable with more complex positions.
-
Leg flexibility: work on your suppleness to make the knee placement easier.
-
Core strength: engage your abs to stay stable throughout the move.
-
The
Front Hook ![]()
-
Similar to the Back Hook but facing the pole — hook your leg by the knee from the front. Ideal for building balance and coordination while strengthening your core and legs.
-
Knee placement technique: make sure your knee is secure before releasing your hands.
-
Weight control: distribute your weight evenly to avoid tipping.

Tips for progressing
(but not too fast — go at your own pace and listen to your body)
Strength & endurance
To spin freely on your pole, you need to build physical strength and endurance. This means regular training focused not just on pole techniques, but on general conditioning too — arms, shoulders, back, core. It might not look it, but holding your own body weight and executing moves precisely takes serious strength.
- Strength routine
: include push-ups, pull-ups and leg raises.
- Cardio sessions
: boost your endurance with running or cycling to increase your stamina for longer sessions.
Improving your grip
A solid grip is everything in pole dance — especially as you move into more complex figures. Grip sprays and powders can help your hold on the pole, but
don't become too dependent on them. Regularly training your hands and wrists will build your natural grip strength, which is essential for both safety and performance.
-
Grip strengthening: try ball squeeze exercises to build hand muscle.
-
Grip products: test different products to find what works best for your style and skin type.
Thriving in your practice
Consistency over intensity!
Consistency is the key to success — we can't say it enough! ![]()
Set yourself a regular, progressive practice schedule suited to your level and goals. Home sessions with tutorial videos, pole dance playlists on your speakers, flexibility work in front of the TV, Sunday morning yoga — you have so many options to complement your pole practice. But
: even at home, every session should include time for warm-up and cool-down, not just the figures.
-
Plan your training: a clear schedule is the key to a lasting routine!
-
D-I-V-E-R-S-I-F-Y: keep things fresh by varying your exercises — for your mind and your muscles.
Self-learning: yes, BUT…
